Kids in America
"Kids in America" is a photographic portrait project shot on 35mm colour film, documenting English college students as they experience the vastness of New York City for the first time. The series explores themes of social mobility, the transformative power of opportunity, and the stillness found in moments of reflection amidst an environment so dynamic and overwhelming.
Each portrait is framed wide, positioning the students against the iconic and imposing backdrop of New York. This approach juxtaposes the individuality of the subjects with the enormity of their surroundings, highlighting both their sense of awe and their quiet introspection. These images capture not only the scale of the city but also the deeply personal moments of discovery and growth taking place within the students themselves.
Shot on 35mm colour film, the project seeks to create and preserve an authentic memory for the subjects. The tactile quality of film—with its grain, texture, and depth—imbues each image with a timeless and genuine feel, making the experience tangible for those photographed. The act of shooting on film mirrors the reflective nature of the project, slowing down the process to focus on capturing real, unfiltered moments that the students can look back on as a record of their journey.
"Kids in America" is about more than just a trip; it’s about creating an opportunity to expand horizons and foster new perspectives. By documenting these young people in moments of stillness and connection within an otherwise fast-moving city, the series underscores the impact of these experiences on personal growth and ambition.
All permissions for inclusion in this project were verbally provided by the subjects, ensuring their comfort and trust throughout the process. These portraits stand as a shared memory, a reminder of the significance of access, exploration, and the possibilities that arise when young people are given the chance to see themselves in a new light and place.
